Spanish Colonial Art

Spanning three and a half centuries (c. 1492-1850), the gallery deals with Spanish Colonial Art –paintings, sculptures and decorative arts–, varied objects that represent the diverse cultures and geographic areas of Latin America including the historical Spanish viceroyalties of New Granada, Peru and Rio de la Plata, and present-day countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Peru or Venezuela, among others. The independence of the Latin American colonies from the empires of Spain and Portugal discovered many of these new nations to a great number of European traveler artists, and our gallery is also specialized in this sort of nineteenth century landscapes and views of the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean.
